During April 2004 something very important changed in my life: I now had my own car. It might not seem like much but being an auto-enthusiast meant it was very important for me. It then had 12 years old and it wasn't in perfect condition. Still, it was great and a joy to drive. And... have I told you, yet? What an engine!
I wanted to stay behind the wheel for hours and hours, driving on. But there was a question which was getting my attention; my father used to get an average consumption of 8L/100 kms and travel about 600 kms on a single fuel tank. I was barely getting past 300 kms. There I was... after a 3 hour trip there would barely be any fuel left... and I wanted to do nothing else than drive all day long. Guess what?! Not a nice place to be.
I'd guess you can relate to that. Probably I'd be right to say that in the last few years you relate to it much more frequently than you should.
I started trying to get my fuel to last for longer. I kept getting not much more than 300 kms, so that meant I wasn't having much sucess. I eventually did the maths on my fuel economy to know where I was standing: I was doing 16,4 L/100 kms. Wherever that was, it wasn't good.
That could be called fuel economy if I was driving a sports car with a 6 litre V8. As you know by now... yes, I wasn't. I was driving a family saloon with a "smaller" 4 cylinder 1.6 litre engine.
Not the optimal scenario. To make matters worse fuel prices were now growing to what was considered "very expensive" at the time. And they were still raising. And they didn't stop there. Even if you've just got your driving license, I bet you know that things haven't changed... not for the better.
To make a long story short, I've tried many and any tip I could get. I tried some driving "tricks", hoping fuel economy would increase. And it did... 15,5 L/100 kms. I was now spending less than twice what I should be spending. Believe me, I really thought about parking the car and going back to the bus.
But I didn't. I kept trying. I read about it. I learned more and more. Yes, I also kept spending too much on fuel. I talked to people who were experts on cars and engines... actually, based on a few of them told me, I later concluded that they weren't that much of an experts. At least on fuel economy, they weren't. I kept experimenting and driving, and my fuel economy got better. And better. And better.
How much better? I was able to go from 16,4 l/100 kms to about 8 l/100, and sometimes I would even get 7,5 l/100 kms.
But that wasn't enough for me and I kept improving. Was it worth it? Yes, it was. Eventually I peaked at 6,1 l/100 kms. No, I don't always get 6,1 l/100 kms, I wish I did. But I consistently get around 6,5 l/100 kms almost without effort.
Maybe more important for you than numbers, keep in mind that I get that kind of fuel economy with barely any effort. When I started trying I had to try hard and results were barely noticeable. But today I've gotten so used to drive efficiently that I just can't get bad fuel economy, even if in some situations I drive in a little less economical way.
I don't consider myself the best example but I have no doubts in telling you that YOU too can improve your fuel economy considerably.

Two years ago I was driving a Rover Coupe Turbo,
